US rolls back China Covid flight curbs to boost air travel
STARTING November 9, the number of weekly flights between the US and China will increase to 70, according to American officials, reports Bloomberg.
This marks a gradual easing of restrictions on air travel services initially imposed during the Covid crisis.
The total number of weekly flights will rise from the previous 48, and the equivalent round-trip flights will increase from 24 to 35, as disclosed by the US Department of Transportation. The initial limit of 24 will come into effect on Sunday, following an earlier agreed-upon relaxation from 12 flights.
The US Department of Transportation intends to establish an ongoing and productive dialogue with its counterparts at the Civil Aviation Administration of China to facilitate a gradual and broader reopening of the US-China air services market.
They aim to create a roadmap for a phased and predictable return to the agreed-upon capacity entitlements.
This development in air travel services follows a series of talks held in Washington, during which Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi met with secretary of state Antony Blinken, national security advisor Jake Sullivan, and President Joe Biden.
The officials have tentatively agreed to arrange a meeting between President Biden and President Xi Jinping.
