Overview of port operations
In the 3rd week of 2024, due to disputes over salaries, there was another GDL (German Train Drivers Union) strike scheduled from 01, 01, 2024 until 12, 01, 2024, during which the rail transportation almost stood a still. Deutsche Bahn stated that only about 20% of its long-distance trains were in operation, and freight trains in many areas had suspended their service. In addition, it is reported that severe frost had caused some damage to the main road from Malaszewiczw to Oderbrucke (Opalenica - Nowy Tomys), which may lead to restrictions on the traffic in this section.
The delivery of the westbound trains is good, and the market is active. The spot freight rates have continued to rise. Due to significant differences in booking prices at various platforms, there are also significant differences in space supplies. There were still a few remaining ones at the end of January. Xi'an-Duisburg has sufficient slots, where trains will be dispatched daily from the 17th to the end of the month, and the seats on the express have been sold out.
In January, the loading stations for return trains from Europe to Chengdu have been confirmed, and cargo can be loaded at Marasevic, Tilburg, Nuremberg, Duburg Hamburg, Budapest, and Milan. Besides, Yiwu, Dalian, Chongqing, Hefei, and Changsha all have eastbound trains on running, and the schedule is intensive in the middle and late month.
The spot freight rates for return trips are relatively stable. The prices of trains returning to Chongqing and Changsha in February remain unchanged.
The cargo volume has significantly decreased, with overall supply exceeding demand. At present, the booking prices on the platform have not been significantly adjusted. Trains from Xi'an to Istanbul, Poti, and Baku are often delayed, and there are sufficient spaces available for booking.
