Adverse weather led to a reduction in transits around the Cape of Good Hope last week.
According to Lloyd’s List, total transits were down 14.8% w/c July 22, with 597 compared with 701 during w/c July 15. The biggest decreases were seen in the container (16.9%) and bulk (18.5%) carrier sectors.
Conditions in the region off the southeast of South Africa were notably rough on Monday (29 July) morning, with wind gusting up to Force 9 and swell causing short-period waves of more than 8 metres.
Poor weather has also affected efforts to secure a bulker which ran aground off the South African coast on July 8. Oil has since spilled from the bunker and a pre-prepared oil spill contingency plan was initiated on Sunday morning.
We continue to monitor the situation closely.
