The situation in Bangladesh is worsening again. Yesterday, protesting students declared a long march to Dhaka scheduled for today, August 5, 2024. This morning, western media is reporting that the Prime Minister of Bangladesh has resigned and fled to India as protesters have stormed the palace.
The Government declared an indefinite curfew from 6 PM yesterday evening local time and 3 days general holidays from August 5 – 7 (Monday – Wednesday), so offices, factories and banks are closed until Thursday at the earliest.
Mobile internet is blocked and broadband connection is intermittent and very slow.
Transport movement in Dhaka-Chattogram highway, the key trade route, faces disruption again due to heavy protest by the students in the roads. Roads are blocked in some areas.
As of yesterday, the CFS was operating but productivity was slow due to heavy protest by the students in the roads. Roads are blocked in some areas which is obstructing movement to the port. The port was operating yesterday, but there is congestion due to slow import release and backlog created since the situation began. Average Vessel waiting time is 3-4 days. About 85% of Port capacity is occupied due to slow import release by consignees.
Equipment: Aside from Maersk and CMA, carriers are facing shortage/tight of equipment. The below chart summarises the equipment situation per carrier at Chittagong.
