Both sea and air port operations are being impacted in Shanghai and Ningbo following Typhoon Bebinca which hit China earlier this week. The storm is widely reported to have been the strongest typhoon in 75 years.
Our China based air freight team have advised that the space is very tight following the storm. This is due to the airport being closed for approx. 24 hours earlier this week during the height of the storm, with hundreds of flights being cancelled as a result. Space was already tight before typhoon due to eCommerce and large electronics air freight shipments.
For ocean freight, The Loadstar is reporting this week that departures from Shanghai’s container terminals are likely to be erratic following the typhoon. Vessels that avoided the area over the weekend in anticipation of the storm will now be preparing to return, resulting in vessel bunching that is expected to cause delays over the next week. The situation is similar in Ningbo.
A further typhoon, Typhoon Pulasan, is expected to reach Zhejiang Province on Thursday afternoon/evening local time, but we are hopeful that this won't cause any further disruption to port operations.
Our China team is monitoring the situation and we will continue to provide relevant updates as required.
