The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), which represents thousands of dockworkers across the US, has agreed to suspend its strike while negotiations continue. Members of the union walked out on Tuesday 1 October at 14 major ports along the East and Gulf coasts, halting container traffic from Maine to Texas.
The ILA says its has reached a tentative agreement on wages and will go back to work on Friday until 15 January, when they will begin to negotiate “all other outstanding issues”.
The move ends a strike that had been heavily impacting East and Gulf coast ports and threatened the US supply of fruits, automobiles and other goods.
“The decision to end the current strike and allow the East and Gulf coast ports to reopen is good news for the nation’s economy," said Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation in a statement.
