General overview: The weekly normal capacity for the FEWB trade lane to North Europe is approximately 330,000 TEUs. For the second half of December, capacity has been reduced by 11%.
The Mediterranean’s weekly normal shipping capacity is about 189,000 TEUs. Currently, December blank sailings mean a capacity reduction of around 8-10%.
December volume is stronger than November, but the rush for Chinese New Year has not yet begun. The Mediterranean trade is doing better than North Europe, with volumes picking up. The real booking surge for Chinese New Year is expected in the last two weeks before the holiday, which begins on Wednesday 29 January, 2025.
More capacity has been added to North Europe, with extra loaders, but vessels are still full, and some cargoes are being rolled due to limited space.
The TPEB (Transpacific Eastbound) trade line is currently experiencing tight space availability across all regions. For PSW (Pacific Southwest), space is limited and rolling, with carriers beginning to restrict space allocations for all customers. Similarly, in the PNW (Pacific Northwest) region, space is tight and rolling, due to limited capacity and blank sailings, which have further reduced availability.
The potential nationwide strike by dockworkers' unions across India's major government-owned ports, that was due to start on December 17, has been averted after successful negotiations.
