A carrier bill of lading also known as B/L or BOL is a document issued by a carrier, this document confirms receipt of cargo which is being shipped. This type of document was originally related to sea freight consignments but nowadays can be issued for multiple other modes of transport including rail and air.
A Bill of Lading is a critical document when shipping goods and enables exporters normally located overseas to receive payment for the goods they've manufactured and the importers to receive the stock which they've purchased.
The main functionalities of this document are the following:
- It confirms that the goods have been loaded with the carrier
- it contains or evidences the term of the contract or carriage
- The document act as a document or title to the goods
