A transhipment port is where a shipping container is offloaded from one vessel onto another vessel at a specific port en-route to the final destination.
This typically adds lead time and risk of delays as compared to schedules that are direct. This is because it adds complexity as both vessels have to be on time and the container must be offloaded and loaded back on to a different vessel.
A typical transhipment port for shipments between China and the UK is Singapore.
