An increase in the number of COVID-19 cases among port workers has added to disruption at US ports, which have already been struggling with congestion and transport issues.
Los Angeles and Long Beach terminals have reported approximately 700 new staff cases since December 2020. Due to contracting Coronavirus or isolating, up to 1,800 staff were recently off work at Los Angeles port, resulting in over 40 container ships queuing and waiting to berth.
California itself has seen its daily average increase tenfold, moving from 4,500 in mid-November to 45,000 by the middle of January.
