Following two recent fires at Shanghai Port, authorities have suspended the land transport of containerised non-essential dangerous goods. The suspension will be in force until Friday 2nd July and will give officials time to develop measures to improve safety.
The first fire took place on Saturday 29th May and started in a container handled by Shanghai Deepwater Port International Logistics. The latest fire occurred on Thursday 17th July when a reefer spontaneously combusted as it was being loaded onto a vessel.
The suspension will not be applicable to cargo required for urbanization projects or the provision of daily necessities.
Lithium batteries are among affected cargo. Despite strong demand for the batteries, the related safety problems have not been effectively solved, which has resulted in persistent fire risks.
We continue to monitor the situation. For any enquiries relating to specific bookings, please contact our Customer teams.
