A recent report from Driver Require highlighted the growing HGV driver shortage in the UK, with a Think Tank predicting the first UK driver shortage in 20 years.
We are now seeing what we believe is a quick escalation in “salary wars” within the UK driver market.
Historically, salaries have been around £160-£190 per shift, however this has risen to £300-£400 in some areas. Driver agencies have also increased their rates by an average of 50%.
Due to the severity of the situation, there have been calls to bring in the army to ensure food deliveries go as planned within the UK. These calls have been rebuffed by industry associations seeking “long-term sustainable solutions”.
Freight forwarders are seeing heavy rate increases from suppliers who are doing what they can to keep hold of drivers. There is reduced availability to cover deliveries, with many suppliers having to stand a portion of their fleet due to the lack of drivers.
We continue to monitor the situation during this challenging time and will keep customers updated. For any enquiries relating to specific bookings, please contact our Customer teams.
