Between 1st January and 1st July 2021, global LNG-powered capacity almost doubled, rising by 90% to a total of 23 ships of 265,000 TEU.
Having taken delivery of seven ships – totaling 110,000 TEU – almost all growth has stemmed from the CMA CGM group, who now control 17 of the 23 ships.
Hapag-Lloyd was the only other carrier to add LNG-powered capacity in the first half of this year. Nevertheless, demand for LNG propulsion has increased, with around 34 LNG-powered ships ordered in the same period.
