Some ocean carriers have reduced the amount of import container free-time at North European ports, including the UK.
Evergreen, for example, has reduced import free-time at Southampton from seven days to five.
This news comes despite importers already facing major challenges such as congested landside operations and the ongoing driver shortage. The driver shortage is already delaying container transport by upwards of two weeks.
It is expected that this reduction in free-time could result in millions of dollars in extra detention and demurrage (D&D) charges.
Carriers say they are tightening up free-time at ports in order to encourage importers to take delivery of cargo promptly. This will, they argue, improve the reliability of the supply chain.
