Two more quayside gantry cranes, also known as ship-to-shore cranes, are going to be added to the existing ones at the Chattogram port this week to enhance the port's efficiency in handling containers to and from vessels. Inclusion of the new gantry cranes will significantly reduce the stay time of ships at the port jetties.
The Chattogram port is facing a fresh surge in both container and cargo congestion mainly due to slow delivery of goods for the 10-days since the Eid vacation, disrupting scheduled departure and berthing of vessels. Apart from the pile-up of import containers, the port's yards and sheds are also overcrowded with bulk cargo.
Off dock situation:
CFS: The situation is a little bit relaxed in CFS because of cargo flow decline.
Container Yard: Depot container yards are the same as the port. Lots of import and MTY containers are laying at yard but unable to discharge from yard.
Containers Shortage: All liners have low stock of empty containers. Freight Forwarders are struggling to get the containers from CMA/ Hapag/ WAN HAI/ YML/ HMM/ EMC/ COSCO/ One line/ MSK because of having the shortage of empties at depots and less discharge of import containers from both port and depot.
Road status: Roads are undergoing construction however traffic is currently normal.
