A new container shipping service directly connecting the Chattogram port to one in Italy will reduce costs by almost 40 per cent, opening a new horizon for Bangladesh's foreign trade. Goods will be able to reach Europe in just 16 days whereas it currently takes 40-45 days or more for the use of transhipment ports.
An intense competition is ongoing among private inland container depots (ICDs) to see who can handle the most import and export cargoes, which is helping ease congestion at Chittagong Port by facilitating the quick clearance of shipments. At present, there are 19 private ICDs located in and around Chittagong city. Among these, six ICDs have remained in the top position for handling both export and import containers in the last five years.
Vessel Berthing condition: 4 vessels are waiting at outer anchorage but due to lead time, most of the vessels are sailing within 48 hours. Also, vessels aren’t able to complete their import discharge on time. Because of import yard congestions, the import container discharge process is getting slow and creating the trailer jam at both the vessel hook point and yard. This is reason why many containers are getting shut out.
Containers Shortage: All liners have few empty stocks. FFW are struggling to get the containers from WAN HAI/ YML/ HMM/ EMC/ COSCO/ One line because of having a shortage of empty's at depots and a lower discharge of import containers from both port and depot.
