Update on USWC ILWU/PMA terminal labor negotiations:
- Security guards: ILWU Security guards that work in the majority of LA-LG terminals have voted to strike, but they have not implemented a strike or actually gone on strike and no date has been set for the strike. This specific union has been negotiating their contract for three years. The PMA will be submitting their newest proposal this week. The risk appears low for a strike.
- Port labor: Recently, ILWU port workers have not worked the semi-automated section of APM Terminals Pier 400, citing working conditions – which is a predictable negotiation tactic aimed at automation and similar to other incidents in west coast ports.
- The PMA has flagged this to ILWU President Willie Adams and U.S. Secretary Walsh as an example of not good faith bargaining and not working at ports while negotiations are
underway – a pledge both parties made to President Biden to keep supply chains moving since June 13, 2022. - 2M has had several vessels that were intending to call the semi-automated section easily move to our conventional terminal berth nearby or call at another terminal as an adhoc
contingency for this temporary situation. - APM Terminals is meeting with the PMA at a local LA level with ILWU leaders to continue good faith bargaining and constructive discussions. MSK expects the meetings to be helpful in addressing this temporary situation.
- Pier 400 is fortunate to operate both an automated terminal section and a conventional terminal section. This enables us to always have the unique capability of a backup berth and
container yard. The conventional yard has been open and working normally without incident. - (Source: MSK)
